  • Spent much of this weekend with a fantastic group of readers and authors at the Rachael Johns Bookclub retreat. Full props to @rachaeljohnsisanauthor and @antheahodgson for their incredible planning and organising - such a lot of hard work behind the scenes. Gutted I had to leave early because of not feeling too well, but great to meet so many lovely people over the last few days. Thanks also to @virtually.annie for hosting the fab in conversation yesterday about dark fiction with fellow authors @kyliekadenwrites @nicoleflockton and @deb_jordan_author - I now have lots more books on my to read pile!

I promised I would put here all the authors/books mentioned in the speed dating round (where I got everyone to play the fastest game of bingo ever - Aussie Crime Writer bingo!) So here we go:

@janeharperauthor The Dry @dervlamctiernan The Ruin (The Unquiet Grave) @anna_downes_writer Red River Road @pipdrysdale The Close Up @sallyhepworth The Darling Girls, Christian White - The Ledge @thehammernow Scrublands, Garry Disher - Bitter Wash Road @jppomare 17 Years Later @mb_randi Wimmera @lianemoriarty_official Here One Moment @candicefoxauthor High Wire (and Hades) @raecairnswrites Dying to Know @bmcarrollauthor One of Us is Missing @dinukamckenzie Tipping Point @michaelrobotham Storm Child @ayliffetim State of Fear @davidwhishwilson Cutler @ghostspecies (James Bradley) Landfall @janecaro57 Lyrebird @aoifejclifford It Takes a Town @mercedes.mercier.writes White Noise @fleurmcdonald The Prospect and Kerry Greenwood - the Phryne Fisher series

Just a few to keep you entertained!

Thanks for having me at the retreat and wishing everyone safe travels home.
  • Should you have multiple perspectives in a thriller novel? And if you do use them, how do you leverage them for best effect? In this week's Resilient Author post, I share the benefits (and challenges) of writing in multiple POV's and give you an insider look into how I executed this in my latest novel, When She Was Gone. Link in the usual place 😉

  • Taking a moment to celebrate my dear friend Catrina Aniere who got an OAM this week for her work as CEO and cofounder of the extraordinary and amazing charity @millenniumkids - which does so much to support and empower young people to learn about the environment and know they can make a difference. My girls have had some incredible opportunities because of Cat, and we are all very lucky to be part of the genuine and caring MK community, which is full of lots of beautiful souls. Congratulations Cat, on this recognition for everything you have done and everything you have built. You are truly inspirational.

(Cat is pictured here with MK Citizen Science Coordinator Wayne, her mum Joan, and my daughter, who all went to watch her investiture)
  • I’m a bit late posting about this because I was away last week, but I am part of the current Authors & Artists for Palestine fundraiser, and very glad to be able to contribute. If we can’t look beyond politics to find our shared humanity in the face of suffering, we lose everything. The money raised from the auction will be donated to Medecins Sans Frontieres, UNRWA, Olive Kids and Palestine Children’s Relief Fund. There are many valuable items up for grabs by dozens of authors including @dranitaheiss Emily Bitto, Nam Le, @dinukamckenzie and @writermoss , so please take a look as there’s only 48 hours left in the auction. 🙏🏻 I’ll also put the direct link to this item in my stories.
  • I’ve had such a fabulous time in Sydney and the Blue Mountains over the last couple of days! Thank you to everyone who came to my events, to Oberon Library (especially Rhiannon for hosting), @booksplusbathurst (loved chatting to you, Sam!) and @betterreadbookshop for the events, to Nicola and Zara from @harpercollinsaustralia for taking me out and about, and @taracpwynne for being all round awesome. I also recorded an authors on authors interview with my lovely mate @pipdrysdale at @betterreadingau which I can’t wait to share with you all soon - and loved meeting the team there (thanks for making the process so easy and fun)! And you can now find signed copies in @dymockssydney (George St) @kinokuniya_sydney @abbeysbookshop @constantreaderbookshop and @harryhartog.mosman ❤️📚❤️📚❤️
  • How I will treasure this photo - full of rockstar authors who were kind enough to come and help me celebrate the launch of When She Was Gone. There was such warmth and generosity in the room last night at @betterreadbookshop and it was brilliant to finally meet so many authors I have admired for years! Thank you so, so much 🙏🏻 this was truly special xx

Also a huge thank you to @anna_downes_writer for doing an amazing in convo straight after a big night at the ABIAs! Her book Red River Road is an incredible thriller set along WA’s Coral Coast and was shortlisted for general fiction book of the year 🎉 I LOVED it - it’s an intense and twisty psychological thriller and if you haven’t read it yet then I promise you’ll devour it!

And finally a massive thank you to my publisher @annavaldinger for coming along on the back of the ABIAs too, it was brilliant to have you there ❤️❤️ To @ghostspecies - loved catching up with you! And @storytellerevents_alexandra - great to meet you!

@vanessamccausland @raecairnswrites @bmcarrollauthor @petronellamcgovern_author @dinukamckenzie @akalagianblunt @pipdrysdale @anna_downes_writer @jessicadettmannauthor @pamelacookwrites @jamesmcwatson and @katiehoskinswriter
  • @dranitaheiss got in another 5 quick questions for each other after our event last night! 😜
  • Thank you to everyone who came along to AH Bracks Library last night for the loveliest event with @dranitaheiss - Anita is an incredible speaker and all round champion, and it was a true privilege to be part of this event with her. Thanks also to @lorrainehorsleyauthor for a fab in-conversation and to all who helped organise, as well as everyone in the fantastic and warm audience as you made us feel so welcome!
  • Super special event tomorrow night with @dranitaheiss - we’ll be in convo about both our books with Lorraine Horsley. Anita has been an incredible support to me over the years and I did my very first speaking event on a panel with her and the lovely Liz Byrski so it’s always super special to do another event with Anita! And her novel Dirrayawadha is truly special. Come and join us tomorrow evening at AH Bracks Library - ticket links in stories and on my website.
