  • This time last year I was just a girl, standing in front of a bookshop, trying not to spend too much money on books and souvenirs. 📚🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿😍
  • At lots of events people ask me how best to support authors so this week on Story Matters I'll be unpacking how you can support the authors you love, as well as catching readers up on all my news.

Sidenote: authors are amazing at doing this for one another - hence this photo from Sydney in May, featuring lots of my fave Aussie fiction writers! Subscribe links in the usual place.

  • A week ago I posted about how gutted I was to learn about all the coral bleaching at Ningaloo (including our favourite family spot Oyster Stacks). A few people asked what they could do to help, and while we’re not experts, my 11yo and I did some exploring and she made these tiles for us all - which includes the great news that the plans for the salt works in the Exmouth Gulf have been dropped - a massive win and one the area desperately needed. 🐬🐢🐋 PS All the photos used are ones from our last trip to Ningaloo in 2023.

  • Heard this in an interview between Aaron Parnas and Ezra Levin recently when they were talking about the 14th June ‘No Kings Day’ marches. Thinking of the many brave souls about to step up to defend democracy, demand accountability and show their support for the vulnerable. Take good care of yourselves x
  • How’s this for serendipity? I’m currently playing around with a performance of And Then There Were None in my new novel and then saw a production was coming to Perth! Went last night, loved it, made notes in the car all the way home. Now to see if I can actually keep pulling this thing together!

  • I loved this chat with @marie.sutro about When She Was Gone for her podcast Twisted Passages. Marie is so warm and lovely, and had such thoughtful takes on the book, and we could have chatted for a whole lot longer! Thanks so much for having me on your show, Marie!

  • I spent a lot of time reading and thinking about AI this week. And it led me to create an AI policy to share with my readers. What do you think? Is this something authors should do? Full policy - and my article available for free on The Resilient Author tomorrow. Link in the usual place.

  • My favourite spot to snorkel at Ningaloo is Oyster Stacks - and I’ve always hoped to get to Rowley Shoals one day. Oyster Stacks is the most incredible place, like jumping straight into an aquarium. We’ve had amazing days teaching our kids to snorkel there. In thirty years of snorkelling in many places around the world, this would be in my top three spots. And now it’s fallen victim to the rising ocean temperatures and suffered from this mass bleaching event, and all those thousands of beautiful, delicate sea creatures have no home and no food and will die. I know this is only the tip of the iceberg of what we’ll deal with in the coming years because of our world leaders’ 50 year failure to come together and have the guts to truly tackle climate change - but this one has hit me hard, and I’m sure it’ll be the same for many West Australians who know how very special Ningaloo is.
  • Many thanks to Elise Cooper for the interview with me that was published as a feature in five different places in the US: Crimespree Magazine, Military Press, mysteryandsuspense.com, Marjay’s Reading Blog and Avonnalovesgenres.com ❤️📚❤️📚❤️
