  • Last week I watched Unknown Number: The High School Catfish (Netflix) and it had me reflecting on what it means to consume true crime as a form of entertainment and how that translates to crime novels and darker fiction. Where do we draw the line as storytellers? What do we need to consider? How do we know when we've gone too far? Join the conversation on this week's Resilient Author post (out now).

  • Come along and watch me, @davidwhishwilson and @alancarter28insta pit our crime-solving wits against one another at The Lane bookshop @lanebookshop in Claremont, WA, 22nd Oct, 6pm. Can I take out the title of master criminal against these two crime-writing greats, or am I just a petty thief? All will be revealed … and it’ll certainly be a really fun night.

Booking link is in my stories and highlights. The Lane have a whole series of events happening that week so be sure to check these out too at lanebook.com.au

  • This time last week was one of my fave events of the writing calendar - the annual Writers of the North event at Clarkson Library with my writing buddies @jtaylorauthor @holdensheppard and @davidallanpetale . It’s always so great to meet local readers and writers, and to chat in such detail about our books and writing. Clarkson Library at the @cityofwanneroo are the perfect hosts, providing a warm space and a whole array of delicious refreshments. Thanks to @dymockskarrinyup for selling books and thank you so much to everyone who came along - can’t wait for next year!
  • One of the highlights of my month was participating in the Dymocks Giving Day - encouraging donations to buy books for underprivileged children. I talk about that AND interview my main character, Rose, from 'When She Was Gone' in the latest edition of my Story Matters newsletter (in your inbox now!)

PS Thanks to Hannah for this photo!
  • If you like reading on Kindle and you haven’t had chance to check out When She Was Gone yet - now is a great time! It’s just $4.99 over Father’s Day weekend.
  • By 9am this morning I had dropped the phone on my little toe, pulled a printer cartridge out that was supposed to be empty and instead exploded in bright blue powder over my desk and my lovely new cream hoodie, cleaned up all the mess, then found our naughty Luna had made off with the polystyrene part of the cartridge packaging and was busy digesting it - after she had continued her work of tearing apart the underneath of our dining chairs.
I had NOT done any writing or even had a shower! So if you see me post one of those serene writer pics with coffee, a clear desk and a beautiful view you can be rest assured I’m having an excellent day because quite a few of my days go something like this! 🤷‍♀️

  • The monthly publishing news continues for my paid subscribers - newsletter out now! This month we're talking about the rise and fall of Unbound Publishing (a sad tale) but balancing it out with some great success stories about indie authors who are earning over a million dollars. Plus how the US Supreme Court earns money for book publishing and more! Link in the usual place.

  • In this month's author notes we talk declining reading rates, admiring Rebecca F. Kuang, the AI pushback and a lawsuit update. Plus what is HopePunk (thanks @ShannonMeyer for your fab article!) and a censoring crisis at an Aussie festival + more.

  • Thank you so much to Kerry and everyone at Margaret River library for hosting me in conversation with @ana_brawls - and thanks to Ana for such thoughtful and considered prep, you’d really done your research and it was wonderful chatting with you. I had a blast and can’t wait to come and see you all again!
